The Way of our Lord Jesus was and is the way of submission to the Father.  Likewise the way of the born again Christian is submission to the ways and doctrines of Christ.

Many born again believers have willingly, and with a pure heart, received Jesus as their Savior.  Far too few however have truly received Him as their Lord.  In the Greek the word lord (kurios) means supreme authority, he to whom a person or thing belongs.  Therefore one who receives Jesus as Lord no longer belongs to themselves.  They belong to Him and they are subject to His will just as He has subjugated himself to the will of the Father.

Scriptures tell us that our Lord proclaimed:

(Luk 9:23)  If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

(Luk 9:24)  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

I once heard one of my favorite preachers, Francis Chan, say; if Jesus was the pastor of your church congregation you probably would not attend weekly services.  As I thought about it for a while I began to understand what he meant by that statement.

When Jesus called His disciples onto himself the first thing that He said to them was follow me.  He did not mean to do so casually or to follow behind Him passively.  He meant to leave everything behind and become a disciple, a student of His.  The apostles, when called, just picked up and followed Him leaving behind their jobs and their families.

(Luk 9:57)  And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

(Luk 9:58)  And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

(Luk 9:59)  And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

(Luk 9:60)  Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

(Luk 9:61)  And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

(Luk 9:62)  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Now not all are called to be pastors or preachers or teachers or evangelists so the application of these scriptures can be broad.  In this case however, if it is the will of our Lord that we put our hands to the plow, we do not look back.  And in that same light when we accept Jesus as our Lord and begin to follow the way, we do not look back and we certainly do not go back to the old nature.

Just as we were once prisoners of sin and of our old nature, what scriptures refer to as the old man, we become prisoners of grace and of our Lord.

(Rom 13:11)  And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

(Rom 13:12)  The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

(Rom 13:13)  Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

(Rom 13:14)  But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

(Gal 3:26)  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

(Gal 3:27)  For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

(Gal 3:28)  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

(Gal 3:29)  And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Before we put on Christ we must first put off the old man/woman.  We must set aside our old customs and traditions and follow the way of Christ.  This means that we are not Jews or Greeks, bond nor free, or even male and female.  We become one in Christ Jesus and all willing subjects to His Lordship.

The call of our Lord onto salvation is one of complete and total submission to His will!
